The sixth and last P is for Poincaré, the French philosopher Henri Poincaré, from whom VUB derives its motto that thinking should submit to nothing except the facts themselves. With Partnership, VUB is looking for joint actions to make the world a better place. Planet stands for actions on biodiversity, climate, air quality, animal rights. Prosperity combats poverty and inequality. Peace is about fighting injustice, big and small, in the world. The first P stands for People, because that’s what it’s all about: giving people equal opportunities, prosperity, welfare, respect. That’s why VUB launched the platform De Wereld Heeft Je Nodig - The World Needs You, which brings together ideas, actions and projects based on six Ps. Concerned about the well-being of the students, VUB organised a huge phone-in campaign during the last lockdown, in which master’s students in psychology called their fellow students to inquire about their mental health needs and to offer help where necessary. VUB researchers from very different faculties contributed research and scientific work in the fight against corona. There was the unprecedented commitment of the entire medical and care staff of UZ Brussel, and the involvement of academic and administrative staff to continue classes digitally during the lockdown. "But above all, this day is a token of gratitude for the warmth and commitment that the VUB community exuded during the cold Covid-19 months and the sacrifices they and their families made," says VUB personnel director Raf Devos.ĭuring the corona period, VUB surpassed itself.
